Blu-ray declares itself 'winner' ?

Posted by Some Guy at 8:15pm on Mon Jan 8th 2007
The Blu-ray Disc Assocation (BDA) has declared itself the winner of the HD wars, for some reason. Probably something to do with selling one million PS3's, although maybe they haven't read the general online consensus of the PS3 yet. No one wants one, and everyone who already has one isn't talking about it because of sheer embarrassment for having blown $600 (or more on eBay) on a system with no good games. Maybe they should try reading some online forums as well and see how negative the Blu-ray talk is. I hope both formats fail, but realistically there is no way for anyone to declare victory at this point.

User Comments

i don't know much about blu-ray, yet. ..but i am glad to have come across this site because now i will search and seek to find out more about it.
i really don't think it is sensible for someone to declare themselves winner of a HD war until their product has been around for a while so that there can be some realistic customer feedback and so that any weakness will likely have become known and apparent. blu-ray discs havn't been around for that long yet.
playstation was the first video games console that i played. i grew up with it and have been a PS fan for years. i suppose that's mostly because of the games, rather than the hardware, but i did like the physical console too and the hardware had something to do with the style of the games made. in contrast, nintendo 64 games had a very distinctly different artistic/graphical style. when the PS3 came out i was excited about it. some PS3 games are great and really take advantage of the hardware capabilities. i was disappointed that some games were of a graphical quality that would be found on PSx games and even then not up to the highest calibre of some of the better PSx games. and the loading times were longer than would be found on many PSx games. it seemed as though they had simply made a PSx quality game and released it on a PS2. and it seemed as though they had either been lazy about it or didnt know the PS2 code well enough to take efficient advantage of it's hardware capabilities. if the same thing happens with PS3 it won't surprise me.
$600 for a PS3 is so expensive. i might buy one when the price drops by a lot. PS2 prices might drop with the release of the PS3 here, so that will be one good thing for me. i'm not a fan of sony, it's just i like some PS2 games.
*goes back to reading about blu-ray discs*

The real winners are the people who got educated about the points against Blu-ray and decided they didn't like PS3.

I think the money has spoken in regards to the Wii, and I predict we will continually confirm this. So, I'm glad the BDA has faith, because that's really all they have. Too bad their statement is more about PR than hope.

Yeah, yeah, if Blu-ray wins, then I will personally set up explosives around Sony's buildings. I will destroy them like I have been wanting to, if Blu-ray wins.

I'm also not glad about the prizes of the PS3, and it's a sad thing if PS3 is only that expensiv because of blu-ray, I think the PS3 when it comes down to FX, GFX and Games is the winner, probably it's going to have more success here in europe than in USA or other countries. Why I think it's a winner because they have realy set the standard in "FX, GFX..." compare the GFX with a 360 and you'll laugh your ass off or the Wii isn't even compareable that's rather a playability winner because you'll probably never find a game on Wii with outstanding Graphics, it's made to play with, and last but not least is the Play Station downward compatibility, no other console offers that and I think it's absolutely crucial or don't you think it's unfair having invested 1000 of Euros into the games and all over sudden not being able to play them anymore unless you kept your old console? I think X-Box is the real loser of all the new consoles! and not PS3! And for the prize of the PS3 it's not a problem if you have a brother who plays, because in the end you are able to play games like they should be played in 2007 and not like XB360 like you played allready on in 2004-5! well, sorry if this is more about PS3 than Blu-Ray but I think it's got to be said, you gotta wait until PS3 enters Europe before you start talking!

And Dave you're talking shit, wait a while then until everything becomes cheaper because that allways happens and allways will happen, because technology ain't stoppin' no more! And soon we'll have movies and games and what you want in the size of a dime in your pocket! And Blu-Ray or whatever will be history!!!

Oh and I love that doggy but it should be laughing about Microsofts stuff like X-Box, who the hell need's an X-Box because it's nothing else then an old PC.

And graphics cards especially from ATI almost offer a PS3 like GFX for PC so even a PS3 is a bit in danger to be ruled by PC once again.

I know what I'm saying as I play games since the mid 80ies!

Anonymous: please name at least two new, innovative and damn good game for the Playstation 3 (series like Final Fantasy excluded, it's not new anymore) before you make claims about the PS3 having the best line-up of games.

And you're wrong, the Wii offers backwards-compatibility with its other disc-based medium, the Gamecube, and retro titles for its other three leading home consoles can be downloaded for the Wii's in-built Virtual Console. The fact that each one can cost up to 1200 Wii Points apiece is irrelevant, it's still backwards-compatibility. It's best you research your points in future before you jump to unfounded conclusions about consoles you don't even own.

First all, turn to to the adult video market, sony and the blu ray makers dont want porn on there systems. The porn market is huge. First bullet in the coffin for bluray, Second the ps3 doesnt have enough games out far it yet, I dont own one but will purchase one for Gran Turismo HD, and Final Fantasy.

So with adult movies going to HD DVD, I say HD DVD has one the battle. Games on blueray, big deal, There will be a new xbox out in a year anyway. It will need support for larger media for games, dvd9 gaming will be over.

So this is for sony, and there failed attempt to take the media market again, betamax? where is that, Atrac3 media format? anyone use this.

Boycott sony and all there products

What a load of rubbish, are you stuck three years in the past or something? you're just making up all this junk and hiding all the real facts...

Let me guess you bought a 360, then it broke, you got a replacement, and was talked into buying a HD-DVD add-on and now you're bitter because you supported the dying and now truely dead format.

Posted by napolian at 10:08pm on Mon Jan 21st 2008
yes blu ray does suck cause why spend 700-1000 dollars on somthing that going to wear out in a year or two and ty for the info on hd tv's. My dad knows a person who can get hd tv at cost but even then its not worth it yet Plus the American Gov is forceing digital out put and makeing people buy Hd tv's which i think is a buch of shit. Another Reason why i hate Hd tv and blu-ray technology mabe when The american gov. gets there head out of there ass and they make blu ray affordible and there machines more relible i might consider blu-ray but even then i might not buy one. i bought a jvc flatscreen tv and its lasted me for like 5 years so why shuld i up grade to hd i dont see the reason to. and iam not saying blu-ray is bad just saying that the people who make the hardwear for blu-ray technology sucks right now cause i trust in what the masses is s aying about hd tv's and blu-ray technology and now u made me a beliver in why blu-ray sucks right now

All of us should focus our efforts getting people to realize HD VMD. It's just as good as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD, but it's A LOT cheaper!

The only reason blue is winning is because Sony is using Money and Incentives to lure Company's to go Blue... The war is not going to be won by the consumer but by the monopolization of these Studios/Retailers(Blockbuster)rentals)...

Blue-ray isn't any more superior then HD... (Vid/Sound quality)

I have a blue-ray and HD player i have had a few problems with blue and none with HD.
HD has better support and far better players.
HD is cheaper to manufacture & players, and is a simpler format.

Video/Sound quality should be the same on blue and HD, but is based on how well the company's that do the hd transfer, i feel in most cases that HD does a better job at doing this.

So What that blue has more capacity, blue and HD don't use any more then 25-30g of space on their discs.
King Kong on HD is 182mins long...

HD has a nice feature with there HD-DVD combo disks.
HD has Ethernet connections.

Don`t get me wrong i like Sony and they do make good products (I own some), But it doesn't mean that their God... I just don't like the way they are going about winning this format war, forcing us to choose a format and not letting us make our own decision ???

I bought a playstation 3 for the games which there are a ton of great games now since this thread has started (very outdated). Blu-ray movies were a plus but i don't use them very much. I am going to get a hdtv in a couple weeks then i might get some movies in blu-ray. Blu-ray has won the war because HD dvd has lost a ton of support. Xbox 360 didn't put the hd dvd in the elite because they weren't confident it will win. Also, blu-ray players do not cost "700-1000" dollars. u can get a playstation 3 for 400 dollars right now.

Toshiba Highly Likely To Withdraw From HD DVD Business

By YUKARI IWATANI KANE and SARAH MCBRIDE
February 17, 2008 4:51 p.m. Wall St. Journal

TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. is highly likely to pull out of the HD DVD business early this week, people familiar with the situation said, marking the end of an intense battle over next-generation formats against Sony Corp.'s Blu-ray technology.

Since Time Warner Inc.'s Warner Bros. decided last month to support Blu-ray exclusively, sales of Blu-ray players and movies have started to gain momentum, putting pressure on Toshiba to consider its options.

"Sales have been hurt since Warner's decision, and we are considering different options," said Keisuke Oomori, Toshiba's spokesman, though he said that nothing has been decided at this point.

If Toshiba withdraws from the HD DVD business, Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Pictures and General Electric Co.'s Universal Pictures, both of which currently support the format exclusively, would be immediately released from their commitments, a person familiar said.

Over the past several years, supporters of HD DVD and Blu-ray have been engaged in a fierce war over the high-definition DVD market as each side launched major campaigns to woo movie studios, retailers and ultimately consumers to their side.

Toshiba was particularly aggressive with price cuts during the holiday season and had been buoyed by solid sales of its players by the end of last year. But its fortunes changed when Warner Bros. chose to back Blu-ray in early January, leaving HD DVD with just a 25% share of the high-definition video market. That meant consumers, who bought HD DVD players, would have far fewer movie titles to choose from.

The Blu-ray side has also benefited from a strong increase in sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 videogame console, which comes with a Blu-ray player.

Toshiba made a last ditch effort to save its HD DVD business by slashing its prices on the players in January by as much as 25% in the U.S., but Blu-ray players still outsold HD DVD players by more than two to one, according to analysts. Movie sales figures have been even more telling. Nearly 80% of high-definition software sales were for the Blu-ray format in January, analysts said.

Meanwhile, retailers, which had been relatively neutral, began successively expressing their support for Blu-ray, in the hopes of putting a quick end to the battle. Retailers are hoping that a decision would persuade consumers who have been cautious about buying high-definition players and movies while a format battle was continuing.

In recent weeks, the situation had become increasingly grim for Toshiba and HD DVD supporters. Major retailers like consumer electronics giant Best Buy Co. Inc., online video rental company NetFlix Inc. and Wal-Mart all sided with Blu-ray just in the past week alone.

I bought HD DVD in November for two major reasons

1) Up conversion is great
2) Sony, I will NEVER buy anything from this arrogant fucktards, rootkits assholes that they are

What do I plan on doing? Buy HD DVD's till they're gone and just buy regular DVD's. The up conversion is great on the HD DVD players. Since I don't do broadcast TV (that's for another rant) I have a rather large DVD collection 600+ and there's no way in hell I'll be buying them all over again.

So Sony can still kiss my Ass!

Boycott Sony!!!!!!!!!

Not much on this site but "that-a-boys" of how good the site is… I'm sure all from the same person.

Sounds like he/she might have worked for Toshiba!

Also a comment about the Gov. forcing HD is not correct. It is (the FCC) forcing digital over analog by 2009. What's so bad about that. Yes you may have to get a new TV....so! Most guys I know think that’s a good thing.

Most of this whining is from folks who don't understand progress, innovation and product life cycles.
U remember, 8-track to cassette to cd! Was that a bad thing? Remember the vhs vs. beta and even the short lived video disc. (I thought beta was better, but don‘t remember why I thought that, other than the compact size).

Marcus0263, While I understand your frustration, if you don’t want to upgrade to the new tech than don’t .

If I thought like this I’d still have my RadioShack TRS 80 computer with a massive 32K memory and the 4 8inch floppy disks that I had daisy chained together. I still have an old portable 8-track player that I won’t let the wife get rid of at garage sales. It still works good as long as I stick a matchbook in there to hold the tape just right! Don’t forget the first game consoles! If you had pong you had to be rich! Yours (no matter if its Wii, PS or what) will be just like them some day.

I’m sure someone is already creating a HD to blu-ray drive/copier that will be on shelves in a yr or 2. But no matter what you may think….the realization of the new tech will win and you will have to buy it or be stuck with the antique players of the past.

For those who say HD is less expensive to produce remember.. This is also part of the product lifecycle. We all know that the price drops as supply and demand dictate. Once blu-ray sits on the consumers entertainment center (the wealthier will buy it first) the price will fall sharply and then us working stiffs will buy. Even Marcus0263 will buy it or be left in the dark.

Look, my point is that this is the way markets work and will always work. I found this sight because I was looking/researching for investment opportunities. I really don’t’ care who wins. The market (the consumer) it seems, has decided that for us and Blu-ray seems to be what they (you the consumer) have chosen.

Those who invest in the new tech (blu-ray) will make $$ for a few years and then a new technology will come along and blu-ray will be something we tell our grandchildren about.

Remember the punch card computer?
Take care, JB

Care to cram your rant up your A**, blu-ray is a great big step up from dvd almost as much or more then vhs to dvd the biggest blu-ray disc at the moment can store over 10 times the data a dual layer dvd can so in respect to picture quality there is room to scal even more up then current HD standards, talking about sound being at it's best in the current state is just as if you had said it 10 years ago or 20 years ago tech moves on even if your brain is still catching up, i guess you would like nothing more then to have your cassetplayer playing mono thats the best right....
So stop whinning about the copy protection the same rants were had when dvds arrived it will all be broken back if you wish to copy your blu-ray movies.
So get with the progress mr page owner ;)
Yours truely,
Tha Blu-ray fan
